Greg Mallett – Lead

Greg has been singing…forever. Coming from an already musical family, Greg furthered the tradition in joining the Toronto Children’s Chorus at the age of 7. Over 5 years with the choir, Greg had the opportunity to tour Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia at the age of 11, and, at the age of 12, ventured through New York State and to the ACDA Convention in Miami, Florida.

Since then, Greg spent time as an instrumentalist, attending Earl Haig Secondary School in the Claude Watson Arts Program and majoring in trumpet performance. It was in Grade 12 that the barbershop bug bit and he rounded up some friends named Jonah and Reuven to try it out.

So comes the barbershop story. Greg’s father, John Mallett, has been barbershopping since 1989 and was an inaugural member of the Toronto Northern Lights chorus in the fall of 1997. As a result, Greg was born into the hobby. It wasn’t until the fall of 2011 that Greg sang in his first quartet and it wasn’t until August of 2012 that Greg joined the Northern Lights as a full-fledged member. But school comes first and after 8 months in wintery Thunder Bay, Ontario, Greg returned to the chorus in May of 2013, just in time to be on stage to win the 2013 International Chorus Contest in hometown Toronto.

Greg is now a proud alum of the University of Guelph and University of Toronto and spends his days as a high school science teacher in the Toronto area. He splits the rest of his time between athletics – coaching hockey and ultimate frisbee, and the arts – dabbling in barbershop arranging and learning track recording while belting broadway in the car.
